Who Is Teaching Your Children

  And Exactly What Are They Teaching Them? There is something that slips into homes without making a sound. It does not announce itself. It does not look dangerous at first. It simply settles in through everyday living until it becomes a pattern nobody questions. It is the habit of assuming. Parents begin to assume their children are being taught what they need to know simply because life is moving forward. The child is getting older, going to school, attending activities, sitting under some form of instruction, and so it feels like everything important must be covered somewhere along the way. But assumption is not teaching. Assumption is not training. Assumption is not formation. It is simply the idea that something is happening without making sure it actually is. There is an old saying people repeat, usually with a bit of humor, but it carries a warning that is far more serious than the way it sounds. Never assume, because when you assume, you make an “ass” out of “u” and “me....

When Discipline Fails

  The Cost of Untrained Children and Absent Responsibility There is a growing concern that cannot be ignored anymore, because it is no longer just “youth behavior” or “a phase of rebellion.”  What we are seeing in too many places is the result of a deeper breakdown in parental training , discipline, and responsibility.  When teenagers are setting fires, taking over streets, or openly disregarding curfews, the issue is not simply the child, it is the environment that shaped, or failed to shape, that child. Children are not self-governing by design.  They are not born with restraint, foresight, nor respect for consequence.  These are qualities that are built over time through consistent training, correction, and supervision.  When that process is absent or inconsistent, something else takes its place: impulse, peer pressure and influence, and whatever the surrounding culture happens to reward (today, it’s anything goes).  And once impulse becomes habit...
