The Deep Meaning Behind Taking HIS Name in Vain The third commandment in Exodus 20:7 says, “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.” In Hebrew, this reads: לֹא תִשָּׂא אֶת־שֵׁם־יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא . The verb תִשָּׂא (tisa) comes from the root נָשָׂא (nasa) , meaning to lift up, carry, or bear. The phrase לַשָּׁוְא (la-shav’) denotes emptiness, futility, or falsehood.
