The Spirit of Discord Exposed
Biblical Truth for Every "Believer"
God’s Word warns believers clearly about the dangers of sowing discord, pride, hypocrisy, churchianity, and mocking what is holy, showing how these sins fracture the body of Christ and grieve His heart.
There is a sickness that has crept into the body of believers, a quiet poison that looks like zeal but is actually rebellion against God. Scripture calls it by name: sowing discord. In Book of Proverbs 6:16–19 it says:
“There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.”
The phrase “one who sows discord” in Hebrew is מְשַׁלֵּחַ מְדָנִים (meshallēaḥ medānîm).
- meshallēaḥ literally means “one who sends out, dispatches, or releases.” It is active; it shows intention.
- medānîm comes from the root דּוֹן / דִּין (dun / din), which means strife, contention, quarrels, or disputes.
This is not accidental disagreement. This is someone who intentionally spreads conflict, who stirs up arguments, who delights in division. Imagine sparks thrown into dry tinder: that is what the one who meshallēaḥ medānîm does. It is a heart set on tearing apart what God has woven together. Often this behavior wears the mask of hypocrisy and churchianity, appearing outwardly religious, claiming faithfulness, yet motivated by pride, judgment, or control. The proud who mock humility may operate under the guise of spiritual authority, but God sees the heart. True faith honors Him; false faith divides.
Pride fuels this behavior. Book of Proverbs 13:10 says:
“By pride comes nothing but strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom.”
The Hebrew word for pride here is בְּזָדוֹן (bezādôn), meaning willful arrogance or presumption. Pride is not quiet or private; it pushes, it elevates self above others, it refuses to listen. Strife, in Hebrew מָדוֹן (mādon), is the natural fruit of that pride—contention, quarrels, conflict that spreads like wildfire.
Even more sharply, Book of Proverbs 21:24 warns:
“The proud and arrogant person—‘Mocker’ is his name—acts with insolent pride.”
Here the word for scoffer is לֵץ (lēts), one who ridicules, who despises correction, who mocks humility. Humility, submission, gentle correction—these are the very things God honors, but the scoffer sneers at them. He does not quietly resist; he openly derides what God loves. Often the scoffer is cloaked in churchianity, using appearances of religion to assert control or status, yet the heart remains divided and proud.
Book of James 4:6 reminds us of God’s position on pride:
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
The word for proud is ὑπερηφάνοις (hyperēphanois), those who elevate themselves above others. “Opposes” here is ἀντιτάσσεται (antitassetai), showing active resistance. God does not merely ignore pride; He sets Himself against it. And grace, the undeserved favor of God, is poured out to the humble—those who bow their hearts, who listen, who honor what is holy.
The consequences of trampling on what is holy are sobering. Book of Hebrews 10:29 says:
“How much worse punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?”
The words here are precise:
- “trampled underfoot” shows deliberate contempt and disrespect.
- “profaned the blood of the covenant” is κοινὸν ἡγησάμενος (koinon hēgēsamenos), “treated as common, ordinary, or worthless.” This is not ignorance; it is knowing the sacred and despising it.
- “outraged the Spirit of grace” expresses a direct affront to the very power of God that brings salvation and restoration.
God’s justice is real, measured, and proportional. In Book of Luke 12:47–48, it explains clearly:
“And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know, and did things deserving punishment, will receive a light beating. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.”
Knowledge and intention matter. Accountability is not equal because God is perfectly just.
Yet in the midst of these warnings, Scripture also shows the remedy. Discernment, humility, and love are the tools God gives us to resist discord, pride, hypocrisy, and churchianity. Proverbs 11:14 and Proverbs 12:18–19 tell us about wisdom:
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” (Proverbs 11:14)
“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” (Proverbs 12:18)
“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.” (Proverbs 12:19)
Wisdom listens, seeks counsel, and seeks to restore, not destroy. The Hebrew word for “counsel” in Proverbs 11:14 is עֵצָה (‘ēṣâh), meaning advice, guidance, or thoughtful direction. The “tongue of the wise” in Proverbs 12:18 is לָשׁוֹן חָכָם (lāshôn ḥāḵām), literally “wise speech,” showing deliberate, restorative words rather than harmful ones.
James 4:6–7 calls us to humility and resistance of the proud:
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
The word for “humble” is ταπεινοῖς (tapeinois), meaning those who bow, who willingly lower themselves before God. “Resist” is ἀντιστάσθω (antistásthō), showing deliberate opposition to the forces of pride and division.
Sowing discord, pride, hypocrisy, churchianity, and the mocking of humility are a cycle. They fuel one another. Pride leads to strife; strife leads to faction; factions multiply under the guise of religion; the body of Christ fractures when human judgment elevates over holiness. Yet the Word of God shows us the way to walk in the Spirit: love honestly, speak truth gently, refuse to participate in division, and restore those who wander from unity.
The challenge is urgent because the world is watching. The Spirit of God is calling for believers to stand firm, to guard hearts, and to honor what is holy. This is the battle not of flesh, but of the heart, of obedience, of faith, and of reverence.
Let every reader understand: discord, pride, scoffing, hypocrisy, churchianity, and trampling on holiness are not minor offenses. They are serious, they grieve God, and they have consequences. Yet humility, love, and honor for God’s Word bring protection, grace, and life. We are called to be lights in a darkened world, to resist the forces that seek to divide, and to glorify God in every word, every action, and every heart posture.
In Yeshua’s Holy name, Amen Amen.

PrayerFather God, we bow before You, fully aware that You see the hearts of all Your children. Expose every trace of discord, pride, hypocrisy, and churchianity in our midst. Strengthen Your people to walk in humility, to honor the blood of the covenant, and to hold what is holy as sacred. Guard our words, our actions, and our hearts, that we speak only truth, love fully, and restore those who wander from unity. Pour out Your grace, overshadow the proud, and make our lives a testimony of Your holiness and power. Let every spark of division be quenched by Your Spirit. Protect Your Church from the forces that seek to fracture it, and unite us in obedience, reverence, and love for You.
