Yeshua Is Not YHWH: What the Ancient Scriptures Really Say
The one true God of Israel is called יהוה (YHWH) in Hebrew. This name is super special—it means “I AM” or “I exist.” When God spoke to Moses, He said, “אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה” (Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh) — “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). This shows God is eternal, always existing, no beginning and no end.
Now, Yeshua haMeshiach (Jesus the Messiah) is called the “Son of God”. In Greek, that’s υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ (huios tou Theou). The Bible says He was begotten (Greek: μονογενής, monogenēs), meaning He has a unique origin. He is not the eternal, uncreated God, יהוה.
In John 1:1, it says:
-
Ἐν ἀρχῇ ἦν ὁ Λόγος (En archē ēn ho Logos) — “In the beginning was the Word.”
Logos (Λόγος) means the divine Word, the reason and expression of God. -
Then: καὶ ὁ Λόγος ἦν πρὸς τὸν Θεόν (kai ho Logos ēn pros ton Theon) — “and the Word was with God.”
Pros (πρὸς) means “toward” or “face-to-face with.” So the Word is in a close relationship but distinct from God. -
Finally: καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος (kai Theos ēn ho Logos) — “and the Word was God.”
Notice Theos (Θεὸς) has no article (no “the”), which means the Word has the nature of God—divine essence—but is not exactly the same person as τὸν Θεόν (ton Theon), the personal God with the article.
Yeshua is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). He came from God but is not the same as the eternal God who said “I AM.”
Yeshua also says things like:
-
“Ὁ Πατὴρ μείζων μου ἐστίν” (Ho Patēr meizōn mou estin) — “The Father is greater than I” (John 14:28).
And He prays to God, showing a relationship between two distinct persons.
In Hebrew Scriptures, the Messiah is a human descendant of David (Hebrew: דָּוִד, David), born of a woman, not an eternal uncreated being. Yeshua’s humanity and Sonship point to distinction, not identity, with יהוה.
So, in simple terms: יהוה (YHWH) is the one eternal God, self-existent forever. Yeshua is God’s Son, divine in nature (θεός, Theos), but distinct from the Father, with a beginning as the Messiah sent into the world.
Think of it like the sun (יהוה), and the rays of sunlight (Yeshua) shining from it. The rays come from the sun, carry its light, but are not the whole sun.
That’s how the ancient Hebrew and Greek Scriptures show Yeshua is divine but not the exact same person as יהוה.
Amen and shalom!
